Environment and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)

Access to clean water, proper sanitation, and a healthy environment is a human right—and a foundation for health, dignity, and development. At Zan Health, our Environment and WASH program is dedicated to improving community infrastructure, promoting lifelong hygiene practices, and protecting Zanzibar’s natural ecosystems.

    Water & Sanitation Infrastructure:

Zan Health works with local communities and partners to improve access to safe water and sanitation services, especially in underserved rural and peri-urban areas.
  • Key Infrastructure Projects Include:
  • • Construction and rehabilitation of community water points and hand-dug wells
    • Installation of rainwater harvesting systems in schools and health centers
    • Construction of ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines and eco-toilets
    • Provision of handwashing stations in public places and schools
  • These efforts help reduce waterborne diseases, promote dignity especially for women and girls and support school attendance and public health.
  • Behavior Change Campaigns:
  • Infrastructure alone is not enough. We drive behavior change through culturally sensitive, community-led education.
  • Our Campaigns Focus On:
  • • Handwashing with soap
    • Safe water storage and treatment
    • Proper toilet use and waste disposal
    • Menstrual hygiene management (MHM)
    • Climate-smart sanitation practices
