Welcome to Zan Health Foundation

Zan Health Foundation is a registered non-profit organization (NGO No. Z0000231958) dedicated to improving the health, resilience, and quality of life for communities across Zanzibar. Through a community-driven, rights-based approach, we focus on four key areas:

STRATEGIC AREA OF WORK

    Health and Nutrition.
    Disaster Preparedness and Response.
    Maternal and Child Health.
Environment and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene).
Mental health and Psychological support (MHPS).

We partner with local communities, government bodies, and global allies to create lasting, inclusive impact where it’s needed most.

Good health starts with good nutrition

What We Do:
  • Community-based nutrition education and food diversity promotion.
  • Screening and referral services for malnutrition in children under five.
  • Promotion of exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding.
  • Lifestyle education for prevention of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
  • Outreach programs that link people to essential health services.
We believe that healthy communities are empowered communities and nutrition is the first step.

Disaster Preparedness and Response

Zanzibar is increasingly vulnerable to climate-related disasters and public health emergencies. We help communities prepare, respond, and recover through training, coordination, and resilience-building.

    Our Key Interventions:
  • First aid and emergency response training for communities and institutions.
  • Prepositioning of emergency health kits and supplies in high-risk zones.
  • Rapid response during floods, disease outbreaks, and displacements.
  • Psychosocial support and temporary shelter coordination.
  • Collaboration with national disaster management authorities and humanitarian partners.
When disasters strike, we respond quickly and work year-round to reduce risks

Maternal and Child Health

Every mother and child deserve the chance to survive and thrive. Our programs support women before, during, and after childbirth, ensuring access to quality, respectful care that saves lives.

    Our Approach Includes:
  • Antenatal and postnatal care awareness and education.
  • Campaigns to promote skilled birth attendance and safe deliveries.
  • Community mobilization on family planning and safe motherhood.
  • Training of local health volunteers and traditional birth attendants.
  • Integrated child health services including immunization and growth monitoring.

We’re building a future where no woman dies giving life and every child has a healthy start.

Environment and WASH

Clean water and a safe environment are essential to human health. Our integrated WASH and environmental programs improve access to water and sanitation while promoting environmental stewardship.

Program Focus Areas:
  • Building and rehabilitating safe water sources and sanitation facilities.
  • Hygiene education on handwashing, menstrual health, and waste management.
  • Training of WASH champions and local leaders in climate-smart sanitation.
  • School WASH initiatives, including hygiene clubs and eco-toilets.
  • Community campaigns on deforestation, climate resilience, and pollution control.
We’re working to create healthier environments one clean drop at a time.

Our Partners

Zan Health works in close collaboration with Zanzibar’s disaster management authorities, health offices, and local governments to ensure a unified, coordinated approach to disaster preparedness and response.
